How to Add Text to Speech on TikTok LIVE

By BetterTok Updated

TikTok's built-in text to speech is an effect for the videos you post, not for comments on a LIVE, so having chat read aloud takes a separate tool. In BetterTok, open TTS in the sidebar, press Click to Enable, pick a voice and choose what gets read. TTS plays on your computer while BetterTok is open, and your streaming app sends that sound to your LIVE.

What you need

  • A BetterTok account with your TikTok username connected
  • The BetterTok dashboard or desktop app open while you are LIVE
  • OBS or TikTok LIVE Studio set to include your computer's audio

How TTS reaches your stream

TTS is sound, not an overlay, so there is no link to paste. It plays from the dashboard tab or desktop app you have open. Your viewers hear it only if your streaming app picks up your computer's audio.

In OBS, check that Desktop Audio moves in the Audio Mixer when a line plays. In TikTok LIVE Studio, open the audio mixer from the control bar and check your computer's sound is included. If you can hear TTS and your viewers cannot, this is almost always why.

Set up text to speech

  1. Turn TTS on

Open TTS from the sidebar to reach Stream TTS, and press Click to Enable. It changes to Enabled.

  2. Pick a voice

On the Voice tab, click your current voice to open the list, and switch between its BetterTok, AI, TikTok, Classic and Google tabs. Press Test on any voice to hear it, and Select to use it, or pick Random voice for a fresh voice on every message. Voices that need the Creator plan show a Creator button instead of Select.

  3. Set the volume and test a line

Still on the Voice tab, set the volume and speed sliders. Type a line in the Voice Tester and press Test Voice.

  4. Choose who can use it

Open the Who Can Use tab. Keep Everyone, or choose Only certain viewers and tick the groups you want: Followers, Super Fans, Team Members, Moderators, TikTok gifter level or Top Gifters.

  5. Decide what gets read

Open the Triggers tab and pick Any Message, Prefix or Command. For Command, type the command a message must start with. Turn on Read gifts out loud, and set the minimum gift value.

  6. Filter what comes through

Open the Filters tab. Set Max Message Length and Wait per viewer (sec), tick what to skip under Content Filters, such as spam and links, and add words to your Banned Words list. Under Spoken Languages, pick languages if you only want those read.

When a message is not read

The Reading strip under the page title sums up who and what is being read, and the Recent list on the same page says why any message did not play. Check those before you change any settings.

Free voices and Creator voices

The free plan reads up to 150 messages a day. In the voice list, the voices you can use show Select, and the ones that need the Creator plan show a Creator button. The Creator plan ($9.99 a month) makes TTS unlimited and adds 10,000+ voices, including AI character voices.

With Actions & Events, a specific gift can also trigger any text read aloud, and sound alerts can play alongside TTS.

Stay in the conversation

TTS works best when you react to what it says. TikTok's LIVE Monetization Guidelines say a LIVE operated mainly by automated or third-party tools, without meaningful creator presence, may lose monetization. Set your filters before you go LIVE too: you are responsible for what is read out on your stream.

Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok have text to speech for LIVE comments?

TikTok's own text to speech is an effect you add to videos you post. Reading comments aloud during a LIVE takes a tool that follows your LIVE, such as BetterTok, which plays them through your computer.

Why can I hear TTS but my viewers cannot?

TTS plays through your computer, so your stream has to include your computer's audio. In OBS, check Desktop Audio in the Audio Mixer. In TikTok LIVE Studio, open the audio mixer from the control bar.

Can I make TTS read only messages that start with a command?

Yes. On the Triggers tab of Stream TTS, pick Command and type the command a message must start with. Pick Prefix to read only messages that start with a prefix you choose.

Can I use TTS when I go LIVE from my phone?

Only with a computer running too, because TTS needs the BetterTok dashboard or desktop app connected to your LIVE. Viewers only hear it if your microphone picks up that computer's sound, so test that with a friend first.

How many messages can TTS read for free?

Up to 150 messages a day. The Creator plan removes the limit and adds 10,000+ voices.
