How to Do a TikTok LIVE Battle

By BetterTok Updated

TikTok calls a battle a LIVE match. During your LIVE, tap +Hosts and invite a creator. Once they join, tap Match, then Send invite, or choose Solo match or Team match if more people are on. When they accept, the match starts and each Gift or like earns points. The most points wins. To show the score on stream from a computer, add BetterTok's Battle Score overlay. Its themes are on the Creator plan.

What you need

  • A TikTok account that can go LIVE, and another creator who is LIVE
  • For the score overlay: the BetterTok Creator plan with your TikTok username connected, plus LIVE Studio or OBS

Start a battle, then show it

  1. Start a co-host

During your LIVE, tap +Hosts at the bottom. Tap Send to invite a random recommended creator, or Invite to pick a friend or another suggested creator. The co-host starts when they accept.

  2. Tap Match and send the invite

Tap the Match button at the bottom. With two people, tap Send invite. With more people, tap Solo match or Team match first, then Send invite. The match starts when they accept.

  3. Know what counts

Each Gift or like is worth a set number of points. You can also choose a specific-Gift match, where only the Gift you pick scores, whatever else viewers send.

  4. Add the battle board to your stream

In BetterTok, open Overlays and choose TikTok Battle Score, then press Copy live link. Add it as a Link source in LIVE Studio or a Browser source in OBS. Battles are picked up automatically, with nothing to enter by hand.

  5. Choose how it looks

Pick a theme from the list.

  6. Test it

Press Test battle to play a practice battle in the editor and on your stream, so you can check the position before a real one.

What the overlay shows

While a battle runs, it shows your score against your opponent, then FINAL when it ends. When you rematch the same creator it keeps your wins and losses, for example 3-1, and a new opponent starts at 0-0. It follows 1v1 and 2v2 battles, uneven teams and free-for-all battles of up to four creators. See the Battle Score page for every theme.

Make your stream react

In Actions & Events, a battle starting, a win and a loss can each trigger an action, such as a sound or a scene change.

If the Match button is missing

Match appears once a co-host has started, so invite someone first. If it still does not show, check your TikTok app is up to date, and look under Creator tools, LIVE Center, Rules and guidance, Restrictions. TikTok's guidelines say it can restrict access to monetization features, including LIVE Gifts and LIVE Match, for content that breaks them, such as baiting for Gifts or pressuring viewers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a TikTok battle the same as a LIVE match?

Yes. Creators say battle or PK, and TikTok's own name for it is a LIVE match. It is a co-host mode where creators compete as individuals in a solo match or together in a team match.

Do likes count in a TikTok LIVE match?

Yes, TikTok says each Gift or like represents a certain number of points. The exception is a specific-Gift match, where only the chosen Gift counts toward the final score.

Can I show the battle score if I only go LIVE from my phone?

Not as an overlay. Overlays are drawn by streaming software on a computer, so you need TikTok LIVE Studio or OBS. TikTok still shows its own score in the match on a phone.

Is the Battle Score overlay free?

All Battle Score themes are part of the Creator plan ($9.99 a month). Starting a LIVE match in TikTok costs nothing and needs no BetterTok at all.

Do I have to enter the score by hand?

No. BetterTok picks up your TikTok LIVE battles once your username is connected. Start the match in TikTok as usual and the overlay follows it.
